Originally from England, Michael Gene Scoggins (b.1954,d. 2008) was a master luthier based in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he co-founded Scoggins & Scoggins Violin Shop with his former wife and fellow master luthier, Carrie Scoggins. He also was a teacher with the Violin Making School of America (VMSA) in Salt Lake City. He was a pioneer in the use of native grown American wood for his fine violins, violas and cellos, preferring to source particularly from Oregon and Washington State. This 16″ viola is an excellent representation of masterful quality of work Michael produced. The instrument flaunts a beautiful deep red varnish on its belly and slab-cut back, and produces immense clarity and precision across the entire instrument. The lower register rings with depth and richness, and the upper register projects well and easily. This instrument is a treat to play and would be perfect for an advanced or professional violist.
