Based in Markneukirchen, Germany, the highly accomplished Knopf family of luthiers spans five generations, originating with Chirstian Wilhelm Knopf (b. 1767, d. 1837) and continuing to Henry (Heinrich or H.R.) Knopf (b. 1860, d. 1939) who continued championing the family business. H.R. studied under Ludwig Bausch in Dresden and G. Christian Adam in Berlin before immigrating to the United States in 1880. Soon after, H.R. and his sons founded H.R. Knopf and Sons Violins in New York City, becoming one of the first and most successful violin workshops of the early twentieth century.
The unstamped bow, attributed to the Knopf Family c. 1900, has a round stick with a well-centered balance point, allowing the bow to have featherweight lightness in the hand. The bow is supple and pulls forth a ringing sound that is crystalline, fluid, and rich with colorful sound. You will find the bow strong, ultra responsive, and is primed for strong virtuoso play. This fine bow anticipates fulfilling your violin performance dreams!
