Fritz Mönnig (b. 1890,d.?) established himself in Markeukirchen at the age of 22 after working for 3 masters in Kiel, Hamburg, and Berlin. Mönnig was well known for producing accurate copies of classical models. This particular violin was modeled after Stradivari’s 1715 “Lipinski” violin. Mönnig’s craftmanship was well-regarded. The firm of Tonk Bros in Chicago was Mönnig’s sole distributor in the US. They were a large importer of quality violins. Mönnig’s instruments were all made with a gorgeous oil varnish, and were hand signed on the label by Mönnig. This instrument is one of his highest quality instruments. This violin produces a rich sound in the lower register and has a soaring upper register. This instrument also has an ease of response and general comfortable feel which makes it a treat to play. It would be perfect for the advancing student or committed player.
