Gaetano Chiocchi established himself as a violin-maker in Padua, where he lived for most of his life. In addition to being an accomplished violinist and luthier, Chiocchi served as the music director for the Ballet Theatre. Violins made by Chiocchi, of which this piece is among the finest examples, are known for their intricate craftsmanship and fine varnish. The tone is powerful, colorful and engaging, even across all strings, with a sweet soloistic quality characteristic of old Italian instruments. It is one of the estimated fifty violins that Chiocchi produced in his lifetime. This is an excellent violin for a serious violinist seeking projection and a broad range of sound. Certificate from Kenneth Warren & Son available.
