Richard Duke (b. 1718, d. 1783) was one of the most bountiful English luthiers of his time. He began and centered his career in London with earliest records of his violins dating to 1743. Duke may have studied with Peter Wamsley early in his career. Over time, he expanded his business to several different workshops and employed William Napier and John Betts among others. Duke also followed a number of different styles including models of Stainer, Amati, and Stradivarius. Duke was a strong and early proponent of copying instruments from the Cremonese school of making. Of note, Duke made several instruments modeled after a 1692 Antonio Stradivari that he owned. In addition, Duke expanded his business into music publishing and in 1768, he became the official instrument maker for English royalty. This handsome violin, made in 1780, bears the brand Duke/Maker/London below the button on the back. The violin is warm, powerful, has remarkable internal resonance, and is silky smooth under the bow. You will marvel at the clarity achieved at all intensities and dynamics your bow asks for. The Duke violin will be a treasured companion for baroque, orchestral, and chamber music adventures. Come play a violin with a rich history and an even more rich sound! |
